Look Into History.....

Sun May 29, 2016, 3:53 PM
Cromwell (the other one) by advanceguard  It's fun to see how we look into the past, all too often seeing what we think it was like as opposed to what the available sources tell us it was like...

Obsessed? by Chaosfive-55

I'd like all of you to participate in a little Comments challenge under this Journal entry: pick your favorite historical person and try to objectively tell us why you admire that person, and whether your view of him/her is accurate based on all the available testimony; I'll get the ball rolling with this fellow, about whom I've been reading a lot lately...

Thomas Cromwell was a man of middling common background who broke through the elitist realm of the court of King Henry VIII of England; he was a lawyer and general factotum for Cardinal Wolsey, but after the great churchman fell from royal favor, Cromwell offered his services to the king.  Ever pragmatic and ruthless, Cromwell made Henry's wishes into law--he helped expedite the king's divorce from Catherine of Aragon in order to marry Anne Boleyn...and when Anne fell from Henry's fickle favor, Cromwell was just as useful in getting rid of the unwanted second queen...ever tricky and resourceful when it came to matters of law, Cromwell came up with several useful methods by which the king could get rid of enemies without delaying due process of law--so it is ironic that in the end Cromwell's enemies used these same methods to get his head on the block, when Henry was angry with him for the mess of the Anne of Cleves marriage!  But after it was too late, Henry VIII bemoaned the death of this man, rebuking those around him that they'd forced him to destroy the best servant he ever had!

Now, Thomas Cromwell has traditionally been cast as a villain in dramatized or fictional accounts of Henry's reign...until a few years ago when Hilary Mantel wrote a remarkable novel entitled Wolf Hall.  Cromwell is the main character in the book, and we see his world through his eyes; he emerges as a shrewd, practical, generally humane man, though ruthless when occasion calls for it...the main plot of the novel concerns Cromwell's loyalty to his first master, Cardinal Wolsey, and his determination to avenge the Cardinal's fall from power which led to his death--gaining Henry VIII's favor and patronage in the process, while meeting (and often antagonizing) some of the greatest people in the realm, including Sir Thomas More, Anne Boleyn, the snarling Duke of Norfolk and Catherine of Aragon, Henry's first wife and queen for over twenty years, until her failure to bear Henry a son resulted in momentous changes for England, Europe, and Christianity in general.

Now, even though I am a history buff and a stickler for accuracy, I also understand the need for dramatic and literary license, so I personally don't have the same problems some have had with Ms. Mantel's interpretation; criticisms like "she made him too nice" and "Thomas More comes off as a narrow-minded fanatic" and "she makes Anne Boleyn look like a right bitch" would only be relevant if a non-fictional account was being written!  And hey, Anne Boleyn DID have her bitchy moments, believe me!  Her treatment of the cast-aside Catherine and her daughter Mary was callous and downright repellent, and she had a tendency towards hot-tempered hauteur that at first charmed but later irritated Henry himself.  But in the novels Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies, it must be remembered that we are viewing the rest of the cast through Thomas Cromwell's eyes, and he and More were kind of like oil and water!   Which reminds me, I want you to see this---go to this link!
