The Ghost In The Library

The Arkham Public Library
Is a dignified old place;
The shelves are neatly dusted,
Every book is in its space,
And the silence is unbroken
By the tiniest cricket's peep---
For no one dares to risk
Disturbing Asaph Sawyer's sleep.
Old Asaph was the Librarian
In Eighteen-Hundred Twelve;
He died way back in Sixty-Five,
They found him in the shelves...
But everyone in Arkham knows
That Asaph never left
The books he loved so much in life
And still guards after death...
Last week three giggling co-eds
From Miskatonic U
Came flouncing in to "research"
For an hour or two;
Their whispering, gum-popping noise
Made Miss Lovecraft turn pale---
She could feel Asaph Sawyer's wrath
Gathering like a gale!
"Girls! Keep quiet," the librarian warned:
Alas, it was too late...
The giddy trio of co-eds
Were about to meet their fate.
Blonde Mandy skipped into the stacks
And opened up a tome---
An old man's Face glared out of it
And growled, "Begone! Go home!!"
Blonde Mandy's screaming brought her friends
Running to her side;
They found her senseless on the floor---
"My Gawd," yelled Sue, "She DIED!"
"Shut up, Sue!" frowned Belinda,
The leader of the pack;
She helped poor Mandy to her feet
And led her from the stack.
Sue bent down to retrieve the book
And promptly got a scare
As a bony hand came down with a smack
Upon her derriére!
Sue ran shrieking out the door---
Belinda rolled her eyes;
"I swear, you two are nuts!" she swore:
Just then, to her surprise,
Five icy fingers clutched her throat
And raised her off the floor!
"WILL YOU BE QUIET?" Asaph snarled,
Spinning her round and round;
Belinda squealed and went limp
As the ghost put her down...
Belinda, Sue and Mandy
Transferred to another school,
And here in Arkham Library
We obey the Quiet Rule.
