It's really no big deal.
Holy Hell, I can hear the shrieks and ranting now from all passionate animal lovers (I assure you, I am one of you)--but please, do not froth at me about the plight of the polar bear, tigers, the noble African elephant, the rhinoceros, and how it's all mankind's fault, because you all need to digest and process the following Fact:
Over 99% of ALL SPECIES THAT EVER LIVED ON THIS PLANET are now extinct.
The average species doesn't last more than ten million years; taken in this context, Extinction is the norm, rather than life. What can I say, except that Mother Nature is a brutal cunt. Pardon my vulgarity!
And I am including us in this toboggan-ride to oblivion--I highly doubt that we humans are going to make that 10,000,000 year mark in the fossil record, so savor these moments!
But let me finish with this comforting bit of verse by the great Ogden Nash, from his kick-ass narrative for Saint-Saens' Carnival of The Animals:
Amid the mastodonic wassail
I caught the eye of one small fossil;
"Cheer up, sad world," he said, and winked:
