...like most people, I am both amused by and disgusted with the trio of nonentities currently running for the Republican Party presidential nomination; the Grand Old Party has not been grand for many years now, and if the likes of Romney, Santorum and Gingrich are the best they can muster, then I fear that terminal senility has set in.

Nevertheless, I feel I should step in and defend an opinion expressed by Rick Santorum recently which has caused the panties of certain critics to get all twisted up their--well, you know; it concerns the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, which has been a territory of the United States for many years and has the option of becoming the 51st State of the Union...Mr. Santorum said that before such a step can be taken, the citizens of Puerto Rico should make English their official language.  I happen to agree wholeheartedly with this statement--it ought to have offended no one, for English is the official language of this nation, and for the past two centuries immigrants of all nations, upon making America their home, have learned the language and leaped happily into the great melting pot...so may I ask why the good people of Puerto Rico would not do the same?  To suggest that Mr. Santorum's statements are in any way ethnically prejudiced is patently absurd--this is a communications issue, it's just common sense!  Santorum is far from perfect, God knows--he seems to have trouble with other established traditions of the United States, such as freedom of and from religion, for example--but on this topic he is being sensible enough.

This all may be a tempest in a tea-pot anyway, as Puerto Rico currently has the option of becoming a free and independent nation if the people so wish--there are plebiscites coming up in August of this year, and I wish them good fortune no matter what they decide.

Just thought I'd weigh in, here!  Have a good weekend!!:P

In a play: ''Man named Bracken'' Bracken says the English will colonise the world with their language ... No harm in speaking as many languages as possible - without the whole ethnic/racial/national/etc dialogue pinned to it. We (our minds) are what we speak - the more the better - and that should be encouraged. Language is a wonder of the mind and should be independent from ANY previously mentioned border which are at worst excuses for discrimination and so forth - and at best supportive of diversity, as a neat curiosity - but not a rule strictly followed. Many imposed limitations might thusly fall. ... Maybe not. Nice idea though.
